A dead compressor leaves you with a choice before it leaves you with a bill. The average AC compressor replacement cost is about $1,550, and most jobs fall between $800 and $2,800. A complete new system costs several times that, so the age of the unit decides more than the price of the part.

Repair or replace: two quick tests

The $5,000 rule

Multiply the age of the air conditioner in years by the repair estimate. Over $5,000 means replace. A 6-year-old unit with a $1,550 quote scores $9,300, and so does a 10-year-old unit at $930. At the average $1,550 quote, the rule says to replace any unit four years old or more.

The 50% rule

Replace the system when the repair costs more than half the price of a new one. Two age markers help: repair when the unit is under 10 years old and the bill is under $1,000, and consider full replacement past 12 to 15 years. A new central AC runs $2,500 to $7,500, against $1,500 to $2,500 for a compressor swap.

AC compressor replacement cost by tonnage

The cost to replace an AC compressor climbs with the size of the system, but not in a straight line. The calculator uses a fixed base plus an amount per ton, which matches published 2026 installed prices within about $50 at each size.

System size Installed price range
1.5 ton $700 to $1,300
2 ton $800 to $1,400
3 ton $1,000 to $2,100
4 ton $1,200 to $2,100
5 ton $1,600 to $2,600

For a typical home AC compressor of 2 to 4 tons, that puts the air conditioner compressor replacement cost between about $850 and $2,100, before refrigerant or an after-hours visit. The AC compressor cost is roughly half of that, as the next section explains.

Part, labor and refrigerant

Labor cost to replace an AC compressor

Installers split the bill roughly half and half between part and labor. Expect 4 to 6 hours at $75 to $150 an hour, or a flat labor fee averaging around $600.

The compressor itself

The central air compressor cost on its own depends on the type: about $1,000 for a scroll compressor and $700 for a reciprocating one, while a variable-speed part alone can reach $1,500 to $2,800. We found no installed prices by compressor type, so the calculator works from size only.

Warranty and refrigerant can swing the bill

Check the warranty first

A typical manufacturer warranty covers the compressor for 5 years, or 10 if the unit was registered within 60 days of installation, but only the part, not the labor. Even with a covered compressor, labor and refrigerant usually come to about $600 to $1,200.

R-410A, R-22 and recharging

Refrigerant on a compressor job typically adds $100 to $350, the figure the calculator uses. A full refill after a swap can cost far more, $520 to $2,000, and R-410A runs $65 to $120 per pound installed, so ask how many pounds a quote includes. Older systems on R-22 are another matter: reclaimed R-22 costs $200 to $1,500 a pound, and an R-22 HVAC compressor replacement cost can reach $1,500 to $5,500.

If the tests above point to a new system, the AC replacement cost calculator prices one by size and efficiency.
