Cyber Insurance Cost Calculator
A year of coverage usually costs less than a single incident. The average cyber claim for firms with under $25 million in revenue was about $77,000 in 2025, and ransomware losses averaged $262,000. Cyber insurance cost for a company with 1 to 4 employees starts around $999 a year at a $1 million limit, and real small-business customers pay a median of about $129 a month, roughly $1,552 a year.
Cyber insurance cost by number of employees
Headcount is the clearest price signal in the public data. Modeled annual premiums for a $1 million policy with a $1,000 deductible:
| Employees | Modeled premium | Calculator range |
|---|---|---|
| Owner only | $799 | $799 to $1,240 |
| 1 to 4 | $999 | $999 to $1,550 |
| 5 to 9 | $1,449 | $1,449 to $2,250 |
| 10 to 19 | $2,148 | $2,148 to $3,330 |
| 20 to 49 | $3,398 | $3,398 to $5,270 |
Modeled figures are not prices paid, so we use them as the low end. The high end is 1.55 times higher, the gap between the $999 model benchmark and the $1,552 average paid by real customers, most with fewer than five employees. Among those customers, 41% pay under $100 a month, and the full range runs from $400 to more than $8,000 a year.
Other estimates land higher: some put the median at $2,000 with a range of $1,200 to $7,000, and the average primary policy across the whole market is about $2,287.
What your industry adds
The industry spread in premium data is threefold, from about $52 a month in agriculture to $157 in tech. The calculator’s industry factor is each industry’s monthly premium divided by an $83 benchmark.
| Industry | Factor |
|---|---|
| Tech and IT services | 1.89 |
| Healthcare | 1.40 |
| Finance | 1.37 |
| Hospitality | 1.29 |
| Consulting | 1.20 |
| Professional services | 1.17 |
| Retail | 1.07 |
| Food and beverage | 0.98 |
| Construction | 0.90 |
| Manufacturing | 0.87 |
| Nonprofit | 0.69 |
| Agriculture | 0.63 |
Not every data set agrees. Customer data from one large broker shows finance at $59 a month and retail at $58, well below the modeled $114 and $89, while IT still comes out the most expensive at $179.
Choosing a limit
A lower limit lowers the premium, but not proportionally. In one industry study, a $250,000 policy cost $739 a year, $500,000 cost $1,146 and $1 million cost $1,501. Those figures are from 2019 and the deductible rose with the limit, so we apply them only as ratios. We found no current published price for $2 million or $5 million limits.
A common guideline is a limit of 1% to 3% of annual revenue, with breach costs estimated at $50 to $100 per record for contact data and $150 to $400 for health or financial records. Count your records before you pick a number.
What insurers check before quoting
Security controls are now part of the price. Multi-factor authentication, endpoint detection and backups are increasingly treated as requirements, and strong controls can lower small business cyber insurance premiums by 15% to 30%. That discount is not in the calculator, because carriers apply it differently.
Read the cyber insurance coverage itself, not just the price. Typical deductibles are $1,000 to $2,500 and limits $1 million to $5 million. Data breach insurance is also sold as an endorsement on another policy, averaging about $151 a year against $2,287 for a standalone cyber policy.
Where rates are heading
Cyber insurance rates have been falling. US cyber rates dropped 2% in the second quarter of 2026 and worldwide rates 4%, the twelfth quarter of declines in a row. Premiums written still grew, from $7.1 billion in 2024 to $7.5 billion in 2025.
The average cost of cyber insurance quoted online varies with each publisher’s mix of customers. Treat every cyber liability insurance cost on this page as a starting point for quotes, not a substitute for one.
