Gutter Replacement Cost Calculator
Gutters are bought by the foot, so a tape measure gets you most of the way to a price. The average gutter replacement cost for a 2,000 sq ft home is about $3,200, within a wide band of roughly $600 to $6,500 depending on material and access. The comparison below puts price and lifespan side by side.
Gutter replacement cost compared with lifespan
| Material | Installed price per foot | Expected life |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $5 to $7 | 25 years or more |
| Aluminum | $7 to $13 | 20 to 40 years |
| Galvanized steel | $7 to $12 | about 20 years |
| Zinc | $12.50 to $29 | 80+ years |
| Copper | $18 to $33 | 50 years or more |
Prices are the middle of published installed-price ranges, and lifespans follow home inspector estimates. Not every estimate agrees: some give plastic gutters only 10 to 20 years and aluminum 20 to 25.
How many feet of gutter does a house need?
A common rule of thumb is the home’s square footage divided by 10, so a 2,000 sq ft house needs about 200 linear feet. Contractors often put typical jobs at 250 to 300 feet once the vertical runs are included, so the calculator starts at 250.
Seamless gutters or sections?
Seamless gutters cost more than sectional ones, but published figures disagree on how much: seamless aluminum quotes range from about $7 to $20 per linear foot installed. Because of that gap the calculator prices sectional gutters, and you should expect a seamless quote to land above it.
Downspouts, guards and the boards behind the gutter
Downspouts
Plan on one downspout for every 20 to 25 feet of gutter. They cost about $4 to $15 per foot, or roughly $480 in total for most installations.
Gutter guards
No other add-on varies as much. Material alone runs from about $0.51 per foot for a PVC screen to $6.50 for surface-tension covers. Professional installation is usually $7 to $12 per foot, though one homeowner survey found close to $40 per foot on average, with whole-house jobs from $4,000 to $30,000.
Fascia and soffit
When the boards behind the gutters are damaged, fascia replacement costs $7 to $40 per linear foot, from $1 to $3 for the wood itself up to $8 to $20 for aluminum, and soffit $1.50 to $3 per linear foot.
Signs it is time for new gutters
Look for sagging runs, several cracks or gaps, rust, chipped or peeling paint, downspouts that have pulled loose, rot, eroded beds below the eaves, water pooling next to the foundation and water damage to siding, fascia or soffits.
Size matters on steep or slate roofs. Almost all gutters are 5 inches wide, but roofs steeper than 9/12 or covered in slate usually call for 6-inch gutters, which adds about $200 to $400 to a seamless job.
