Basement Waterproofing Cost Calculator
A damp basement can be fixed from the inside, from the outside, or simply sealed, and the three approaches are priced in completely different units. That is why basement waterproofing cost quotes can look so different. The average cost to waterproof a basement is about $4,900 to $5,000, and most jobs land between $2,300 and $10,000. The calculator prices the most common professional fix, an interior drain along the walls, by the linear foot.
Three levels of basement waterproofing cost
| Approach | How it is priced | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sealant or waterproof coating on the walls | per sq ft of wall | $1 to $8 |
| Interior basement waterproofing with a perimeter drain | per linear foot of wall | $40 to $120 |
| Exterior basement waterproofing with excavation | per job | about $7,000 or more |
The trade-off is clear: interior systems cost less up front but mainly treat the symptoms and need upkeep, while exterior work stops water before it gets in but costs much more and means one to two weeks of digging. Many homeowners combine the two.
A useful benchmark for the interior route is around $5,000 for 100 linear feet of drain, which is the calculator’s starting point. For the outside, the only per-foot figure we found dates from 2021, so we have not used it. Bentonite clay applied to the outside of the wall costs $2 to $5 per square foot.
What size of basement are you pricing?
Priced by floor area, whole-basement estimates run well above the national averages:
| Basement floor area | Estimate |
|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | $6,260 to $7,461 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $12,447 to $14,833 |
| 2,000 sq ft | $24,817 to $29,575 |
The average for a 1,000 sq ft basement in that data is $13,640, about 2.7 times the national averages above. Nothing published explains the gap, so compare quotes on exactly the same scope of work.
Pumps, cracks and moisture control
Sump pump
A sump pump costs $800 to $2,500 installed, with an average around $1,400. Adding a battery backup to an existing pump costs $150 to $250.
Sealing a crack
Injecting a single wall crack costs $250 to $1,500; the calculator spans that range. For a basement leak limited to one crack, price this line on its own.
Vapor barrier and dehumidifier
A full vapor barrier runs $1,500 to $3,000, and a basement dehumidifier $1,000 to $2,800.
Outside the house
Regrading the soil so it slopes away from the walls costs $500 to $3,000. Downspout extensions are cheap at $2 to $17 each.
Warning signs, warranties and insurance
Watch for standing water or puddles after rain, musty smells, white mineral deposits (efflorescence) on the walls, foundation cracks, bowing walls, rusty pipes and water stains.
Professional waterproofing companies typically back their work with a warranty. Many product makers will not honor theirs unless a licensed pro installed the system.
Do not expect insurance to pay. Insurers treat basement waterproofing as a preventive measure, and most policies will not cover it.
